catalogues of the mid 1920's
A group of 3 catalogues of the mid 1920's all came with the same layout of the first three pages and the back side. It's just the prices that made me date them this way, so anybody who can correct me, please do so!
The interiors of these three catalogues are different.
The 32 page catalogue I think could be the first in this group (about 1925) because it has hand stamped "out of stock" at several puzzles that do not show up in the other two catalogues. This catalogue has on page:
27 Six "The Alice in Wonderland" 50 p. Zag-Zaw puzzles, An instructive and delightful series of Picture Puzzles illustrating well known scenes from this famous classic. Size 7 x 5 ins. Price 2/3 each. The puzzles are: - The Pig Baby, - Oh dear! Oh dear! I Shall be Too Late, - The White Rabbit's House, - The Trial of the Knave of Hearts, - In the Duchess's Kitchen, - The Rabbit Started Violently.
28 "The Aesop's Fables, 50 pieces "Zag-Zaw" Puzzles. A splendid method of acquiring an intimate knowledge of these ever popular Fables. Size 7 x 5 ins. Price 2/3 each. The puzzles are: - The Wolf and The Crane, - The Stax and its Reflexion, - The Mice in Counsel, - The Lion and the Mouse, - The Dog and the Shadow, - Te Cock and the Jewel.
29 "Two Handsome Volumes from the Raphael House Library". The books depicted and described are: "Alice in Wonderland." By Lewis Carroll, illustrated by Mabel Lucie Atwell. Edited by Capt. Edric Vredenburg and "Aesop's Fables" illustrated by Edwin Noble, Edited by Capt. Edric Vredenburg. It would be nice if someone could confirm the pictures on the puzzles of page 27 and 28 to be from the books on this page.
30 has a list of "The Raphael House Library of Gifts Books / Edited by Captain Edric Vredenburg. / Thirty-one beautiful Volumes, profusely illustrated in colour, and black and white. / 144 page Letterpress. / Each Volume in an attractive box with the same Illustration on lid as on cover of book. / Bound in Pictorial Board, Cloth Back, ... 31 is devoted to Tuck's Educational Zag-Zaw Puzzle Maps. For further details see Geographical Puzzles
The other two catalogs in this group both have 36 pages and no advertisements for anything else than Zag-Zaw Puzzles. They differ in their make up: characters with- and without scratch and in the number of puzzles per page and number of pages per group of puzzles. I list these details below. So far I have no actual clues to date these catalogues, other than mid 1920's and later than the catalogue mentioned above.
